 Tours - Bafa

In the footsteps of the Ancient Gods, Goddesses and the Christian Hermits on the King's Road

The antique city of Heraclia was in ancient times a harbour town situated at the Latmos bay, which was an extension of the Aegean Sea. But the silting of the Meander River has left it landlocked for the last 2000 years and a good 12.5 miles (20km) from the sea. The bay is Lake Bafa today.

The ruins of Heraclia under Latmos, one of the most romantic but least visited ancient sites of Aegean Turkey, cling to the slopes of Beşparmak Mountains on the eastern side of Lake Bafa, running down to the village of Kapıkırı. Heraclia is associated with the legend of Endymion and Selene.

There is a sanctuary of Endymion, a horseshoe-shaped temple honoring the shepherd demigod. When the moon goddess Selene fell in love with the handsome Endymion, a jealous Zeus put him to sleep. Selene then went to sleep with Endymion and bore 50 children, according to the legend.

Today some of the villagers claim that, on every full moon, the shepherd demigod Endymion and the moon goddess Selene meet in the lake and make love.
